Meet the Captain
The story of the five sea captains who lived at POTTERS MOORING is well documented in the archives and local legend has it that one of them gave his name to the house.
Captain Potter would have sailed from Shaldon, on ships built in the village, on a round trip that would have taken nine months.
Loaded with clay at Shaldon, the ships sailed to Liverpool where the cargo was swapped for salt, and then across the Atlantic to Newfoundland. Captain Potter and his crew would then have turned to fishing for cod, which was salted on board, before sailing to the warmer climes of the Mediterranean to trade the cod for fruit. Eventually they would return home to Shaldon and begin preparations for the next journey. Such was the life of the sea-going folk of Shaldon and of course, Captain Potter. |
